College Preparation Committee
March 22 @ The Hideaway
Present: Ryan Krominga, Robyn Gunderson, Nancy Dennis, Tammy Prichard
Report from the colleges interviewed (so far)
· It’s very important that we explain and demonstrate academic rigor.
· If a school is unknown or questionable, then test scores are very important.
· We should drive the colleges to our website and have our “catalog” online: list classes, pre-requisites, and requirements.
Ongoing work:
· Replace (update and upgrade) our school profile.
· Develop an online catalog
· Define “class,” “seminar,” “project,” and “honors.”
· Develop Honors distinctions for subject areas and projects, along with rubrics for evaluation
· Develop e-portfolios
· Evaluate our transcripts. Consider term reports (aka report cards) instead of transcripts. Streamline with an external document that describes classes. Create demos of new transcripts.
· End of 11th grade narratives for students to use as references.
· Gather information on Honors descriptions for the high school, and possibly the middle school.
· Continue to build relationship with regional schools
· Research requirements for non-traditional, technical and other post-secondary opportunities.

College Preparation Committee
February 8, 2011 at Hideaway
Present: Robyn Gunderson, Nancy Dennis, Kevin Rasmussen, Ryan Krominga, Evelyn Hoover, Tammy Prichard
From the Education Committee:
The mission of the group will be as follows--study and report to the Education Committee on the following topics
· Transcripts? Do ours communicate the level of sophistication of the work our students do? Do we need standardized definitions of “seminar” “class” “project” so colleges know what happens in these settings?
· Honors level work? Are there ways we can designate truly outstanding work so our students’ work is valued?
· Meet with Carleton and St. Olaf admissions officers (or others) and assess what they would like to see from our students—documentation, coursework, scores, etc.
· Coordinate college rep visits with Northfield H.S.?
· SAT/ACT prep? Should we offer this preparation or make students aware of it?
· Improve our School Profile? How do we share our program with prospective colleges?
· Propose any other areas of study? Examine the results of the graduate survey being put together and see how it informs the work of this committee.
Ryan brought a copy of a transcript and the school’s current portfolio.
We discussed the above goals and made decisions to do the following:
· Interview admissions counselors
· Define the following for the sake of including them in a profile statement: Seminar, projects, honors
· Explore North Central Accreditation
· Find out if there is a standard for Honors designations (from the MDE)
· Get copies of transcripts and profiles from other schools
· Find out standards & expectations from 2 year schools, tech schools, and state schools.
· Develop questions to ask colleges
· Updating ARTech’s profile and developing materials to communicate ARTech to colleges
· Educating and preparing parents and students for college
Next steps:
Everyone in the committee will start calling colleges.
Ryan: get transcripts & portfolios from other schools; e-mail a version of the transcript to the rest of the committee; look into North Central Accred.
Robyn: help coordinate college visits (with Joe); explore extended meeting with visiting admissions counselors
Kevin: look into what definition of Honors level work; help define seminar, class, project
We’ll meet Tuesday, March 22 at 7:00 at the Hideaway.
